Are Vet Prescription Diets Good For My Dog?

Filed in Category Weight Loss

Why are prescription diets for dogs considered to be so brilliant, whilst I am not given a prescription diet which is completely ‘balanced’ for my own health condition? If I were a dog with Additon’s Disease, I would be offered Hills ID, and my owner would be told that it would help with my condition. Because I am human, there is no such thing as a ‘balanced’ prescription diet. Does anyone have any ideas why this is so?

  1. They are NOT brilliant at all. It’s crap disguised as science.
Late Entry : thank you little shyt for thumbs down :)
Can’t see YOUR answer though :) )) Prick!
    I rest my case :) ))

  2. MDs have a hard time getting people to eat correctly if they have certain diseases. I cannot tell you how infuriating it is to see my step father’s diabetic mother wolf down biscuits, thinking that since they are not “sugar” they are ok. No matter what you say to her, she does not get the concept of simple carbs being bad for diabetes. I am sure that her MD would give a limb to just prescribe her a kibble that covered everything that she needed.
As for veterinary diets, there are diets formulated for specific diseases. There are joint diets that already have all of the fatty acid supplements/joint drugs in them. This cuts down on having to think about it. Also, with diseases like kidney failure and liver failure, nutritionists have come up with ratios and types of protein, fat, and carbs that have been proven to be beneficial.
There are books on homemade diets for these diseases, but it is hard enough to get someone to give a pill twice a day, much less to research and implement a specific diet to be made daily.

  3. Humans are assigned “prescription” diets for certain health conditions-they just often don’t follow them. People with diabetes, heart disease, gout-all sorts of illnesses are advised to follow a specific diet.
I am not a fan of Hills, either, but, I used the s/d for my poodle’s struvite crystals, and it DID work. She was on it for about a month. The vet wanted us to follow up with the c/d, but that I wouldn’t do, and she’s been fine since.

  4. i don’t feed it… I will get the canned and mix it with my normal kibble..which is orijen but not the Science diet kibble.. I have never been happy with the results
