I Have A Question For Tattoo Artists?

Filed in Category Answers - Tatoos

I have been thinking of becoming a tatoo artist. I know this is dumb of me to ask, but do you get days off from work. What I mean by that is, if you wanted a certain day off would you be able to do it?

  1. i’m sure it would depend on where you work. The people that i know work everyday open-close. They take random days off to rest. Or a week to go on vacation. But it is different at different shops. I’d plan on being open and putting in as many hours as possible when available

  2. if you are going to be a tattoo artist, you may want just use that job as a side job. you dont get paid much so youd just be working twice as much. though i im not trying to take your courage away, but theres no way someone could live off just being a tattoo artist. id say i agree with above, it depends where you work

  3. My boyfriend is a tattoo artist, and runs his own shop. He basically makes his own hours. If someone calls and sets up an appointment on a day he wants off, he just says that day will not work and schedules them for the next day. Also, it works to his advantage that he runs his shop as a private shop, and is by appointment only. So if he were not at the shop, he really isn’t missing out on any business since they would need to call and schedule an appt anyways.
Although, it is bad business to cancel a tattoo appointment if you want a day off. Since I have known him he has only had to cancel one appointment, due to the fact that he was throwing up and physically couldn’t tattoo that day.

  4. Of course you can live of just being a tattoo artist, thousands of tattoo artists do it, and I’m not talking about the ones on TV. In fact, every tattoo artist I know is solely a tattoo artist.
I know every shop is different but think about how much tattoo’s cost, if an artist is hired by somebody who owns a shop, they’ll be paid a wage, same as everybody else hired by a shop to do a job (I have a few artist friends who do this), they get a set wage and work five or six says a week.
If they’re not hired by a shop and do freelance work or have their own shop, the money you pay them for a tattoo is theirs, so say they charge a minimum of £50 per tattoo, even if they only do 3 small tattoo’s a day, that’s £900 if they work a six day week, £750 on a five day week. Take out living/shop expenses and such and you’ve still got a healthy amount of cash. So it’s very easy for an artist with a good reputation to make a living doing nothing else but tattooing.
Okay, sorry for the rant, but that really was one of the more ridiculous things I’ve read on here.
In regards to your question, I’d agree with the first poster.

  5. usually, you work for yourself so if you open up a shop you can control the days to whatever measure you feel but it is still good to set up a schedule.

  6. The first thing is that in the beginning you will need to have an apprenticeship and during that time you won’t make much money and you’ll basically be a gopher it will be up to your teacher when you have time off but when you finally get your own shop then you can work when you want pick your own hours and such
