What allows you to tell the difference between hemp and marijuana?

Filed in Category Hemp

If marijuana and hemp both come from the same plant, is there a plant that can have THC-containing buds, but also contain hemp? I know you smoke the buds to get high from a female cannabis sativa plant, but is it the leaves and stems of the THC-containing buds that are referred to as hemp? Or is it only the male cannabis plants that contain very little THC?

  1. The plants are difficult to tell between, but the method that they are grown is greatly different.

Hemp is grown in rows two inches apart. They have a woody core and are stiff. Hemp is often grown in fields without any camouflage. If you would look at a hemp bud, it is full of seeds, and that is due to the growing method.

Marijuana is often grown indoors, but when grown outdoors, growers often camouflage it by growing it with corn or wheat. It is usually grown as dense as they can, to make more quantity than quality. It is usually grown seedless to make the marijuana worth money.

The only true way to tell is to smoke it, or get it tested at a lab.

  2. short-answer:

If you smoke it: Marijuana will get you high; Hemp will give you a headache

    Same Plant/Species but

Hemp is grown for industrial use: Rope, Plastics, Food, Clothes, etc.
    Generally Contains < 1% THC

Marijuana has a much higher THC ratio and is generally smoked, eaten, used medicinally, etc.

To kinda answer the 2nd part of your “?,” the stems and leaves are not usually smoked, along with male plants. Stems and leaves can be made into paper, for example. So if you wanna call it Hemp, go for it. More of a name game, really. Don’t get too worked over the words… It’s the same plant. and people will know what you’re talking about. Besides, “Marijuana” is an American Bastardization of the Mexican name for it.

  3. As in hemp I assume you mean the fiber rope that comes from cannabis right? The fiber is just stripped off of the stalk of the plant. All cannabis plants contain this fiber, the Hemp plants are called that, because they are bred to have a low THC content and a thick stalk producing more fiber. Cannabis sativa, Cannabis Indica and Cannabis Rederallis can all be hemp plants if they contain trace amounts of THC. And can all have hemp made out of them even if they contain high amounts of THC.

  4. Yes, that would be marijuana. Marijuana is hemp. Hemp is a cannabis plant. You smoke the female bud – sativa is one type. Industrial hemp was bred over time for industrial uses such as fuel, fiber, paper, seed, food, oil, etc. Hemp is the whole plant and bred to have little to no THC.
