What happens to the mollusks whose pearls are harvested?

Hi,

I was just wondering what happens to the mollusks after their pearls are harvested by the pearl farmers? Do people eat them? Or are they simply discarded? Are they sold to restaurants?

Just curious as to how much are they wasted.

  1. they can still live afterwards.. they don’t need their pearls to survive.
