  1. There have been many people named Valentine’s throughout history. If I remember right, the one we commonly think of as THE St. Valentine was a priest that helped a poor man by providing dowries for his daughters so that they could marry. I believe modern commercial interests have done much to influence our ideas about February 14th. At the same time, most people want to be loved and want to have someone to love, so a day designed to help express those sentiments will naturally be very popular. I, unfortunately, will be alone on Valentine’s. My honey lives 3 hours away and he has to work and I can’t make it to his place. I will spend the day with my kids making cookies and cards to give each other.

  2. Im not really sure what it truley means, but i do think that it was actually a really bad day or something i think alot of people died on this day, but they turned it into something nice so people wouldnt be reminded?? but i do like valentines day, but i really dont celebrate it. I show my boyfriend and he shows me all year how much we truley love one another…..he doesnt have to buy me roses or a card and candy. A Kiss or a nice hug to come home too at the end of the day is all i really want!! hope all is well and I LOVE THIS WEBSITE!!!!

  3. We celebrate Valentines day to show our love and caring to another special person or group of people.
I’m going to be a “secret valentine” to my crush on Valentine’s day by sending him a nice love note :) Wish me luck!

  4. sincerely, i celebrate love and appreciate my family and friends everyday, and not just on february 14th

  5. Well, I’m 17 and I’ve never had a girlfriend, so I have no plans for Valentine’s Day. But, I know some of the history. The holiday originates from a story about St. Valentine. He was arrested and imprisoned upon being caught marrying Christian couples and otherwise aiding Christians who were at the time being persecuted by Claudius in Rome. Helping Christians at this time was considered a crime. Claudius took a liking to this prisoner — until Valentinus tried to convert the Emperor — whereupon this priest was condemned to death. He was beaten with clubs and stoned; when that didn’t finish him, he was beheaded outside the Flaminian Gate.
But today, Valentine’s Day is mainly a day for couples, a day to show love, and a day for candy and chocolates! :)

  6. I honestly have no clue as to why we celebrate Valentine’s day, but I would say its a chance for business to make a lot of money right after Christmas and New Years when couples think that they have to prove their love to each other on that day with flowers, candy, etc. I currently don’t have any plans for Valentine’s day, so I’ll probably just sit back and watch a movie, or come on here and answer some more questions! :)

  7. I think it’s horrid the way people are forced to ‘like it’ because some people don’t have a partner and feel very bad about it, and then just to have the nose rubbed in it is just awful IMO!

  8. There was a man who was a saint that was called Valentin and I think he was in love and because of that people remembered how he loved and that it was so pure. That he was a perfect example of how love should be. Therefore they people created Saint Valentines day. This is without looking up the subject so I could be wrong in part. I think that it is one of the greatest holidays to celebrate because. Love starts everything, babies, and they grow to become adults who recyle the love and have babies out of their love for each other. It is romantic because you can rekindle the love we tend to take for granted in the year. Red is worn that signifys passion or love. Which really is one of the preferred colors worn like in nighties when they want to be sexy I hear.(Not that I would, I prefer black myself)

  9. I think we celebrate Valentine’s Day, because we send flowers, candy, or cards to our loved ones that day. I think St. Valentine’s made it up. I am probably going to go through my Valentine’s cards. I get them from school, and I probably might eat my Valentine Gram. I am in Student Council in my school, so it would be wrong not to buy a Valentine Gram.
What are you going to do on Valentine’s Day?

  10. I suppose people celebrate the holiday to show those they love how much they love them.

For the 14th, I don’t have much money this year, so I got my boyfriend a card, and I’m going to make him his favorite smoothie. We don’t need to spend a lot of money on each other to show we love each other!

I also got my parents a card!

  11. It is, believe it or not, a controversial holiday (I believe Iran has tried to forbid and ban it) — that harkens back to the 3rd Century A.D. as far as the Valentine who was a priest during a time of persecution and threatened executions for those defying the official Roman religion/state approved deities and philosophies. When he agreed to marry those couples that were rebuffed by authorities, he was betrayed and turned over to authorities who proceeded to behead him. I thought the messages passed between lovers/those seeking Christian marriage was part of the “legend” of the mid-February day. It may also be the day in the calendar year when he was executed — hence Saint V’s Day — he enters heaven upon his earthly death. I’m not fully sure however that he is a historically “certified” member of the Catholic Church listed “approved” saints. . .
My dear wife has to work on Valentine’s Day (a Sunday this year) but we will have a feast with seafood at Red Lobster on an alternative day. It is a fine day to express one’s love to those who would be loving “in sickness and in health” and “forsaking all others, keep themselves only unto” their Beloved. THANKS for asking!

  12. The other answers and their was the valentines day massacre. No plans, everyday as usual, we forgot our wedding anniversary, why would we remember valentines day, lol, unless he makes up for it. We should show each other we love them every day, not just one day, it is important to let our significant other know how we feel.

  13. Uhh because it’s my birthday. Duhh. I thought that was obvious.

  14. They tell many stories about why is celebrated Valentine’s Day, since he comes from Roman times where it is said he fell in love with the daughter of the Emperor Claudius III … and also says he was imprisoned unjustly and that children and people who had sent her love and appreciation letters motivational and caring … until they killed him on February 14, the day he returned Santo (St. Valentine), so as to by celebrating “historically “but I think that is simply a special date where taken advantage of a favorable trade as there is huge quantities of items to give away … from postcards to the use of virtual cards. I personally believe that not only must one day a year to celebrate love, I say if that joke is not being with your partner “ideal” without giving any affection or a gift that makes you feel good, not only must be a day celebration, but every day of the year, this relationship serves not only to love (whether of boyfriends or husbands) but also the friendship, often a simple hug can say so many things that a gift purchased But everyone sees and does the best way to express that love even for one day a year.
My plans for that day is the way I am with my partner … I’ll give you unconditional love as I give it every day of the year, also will make him a nice dinner (prepared by me) and tell him I love him and he I very much appreciate this with me and that is the best God could have given me, and hopefully we continue to work as much or even better as we have been until now and may God fill us with blessings. Maybe you hear something simple my “plan” for that day, but for me and I have the best, I love for a partner, love of friends and family, but above all I have to me, the rest is just scrap. Greetings XD bye.

  15. i’m not doing anything. It’s a dumb commercialized “holiday”. We celebrate because of some fake person called St. Valentine. But it’s really all about the card and flower companies making money.

  16. Im celebrating it to show how much my girlfriend means to me and im sending her flowers thats my plan

  17. I believe Valentine’s Day is a day that you are supposed to show how much you love/care for another person(or a lot of people) that are in your life. I probably won’t do much, maybe go to dinner or something……

  18. We celebrate Valentine’s Day, because until 1969, it was one of the many Saint’s Days observed by the Catholic Church. It was dedicated to the patron saint of romantic causes, St. Valentine.

  19. To be as sweet as possible is why I celebrate Valentines Day. It is so hard for me that on February 14, 2010, I’ll have to schedule a nap in the day time. Happy Valentines Day, and may you get a mountain of chocolates.

  20. We celebrate valentines day because St.Valentine died on February 13th. I think St. Valentine helped a couple married and when he died on February 13th everyone thought about celebrating it the day after and when it was Valentines day the men would draw an name of a girl in a box and a girl would draw a name of a boy in the box and that would be their valentine for the day. That’s all I could remember from a book I read. I am going to my cousins or best friends house for valentines day not sure yet.

  21. As for me, I think the main reason why we celebrate Valentines and commemorate it as the day of hearts is for us to realize that amidst all the conflicts around us, the problems we are facing, the failures we’ve been through, LOVE is always there – that it was able to conquer all our sorrows and our pain. It is the time to celebrate love – the set day to let people know how much we care, not that we don’t show it everyday but giving some kind of a holiday just to celebrate LOVE is another way of showing it more extra special.

I don’t have special plans for V-day. I’m single and I plan to spend it at home and be with my family. We can have some family time together and strengthen the bond that ties us.

  22. –february 14th is a dumb holiday probably manufactured by some greeting card company to shill their goop on vulnerable people who think a $4 card and a box
of disgustingly sweet globs of chocolate covered goo in a heart-shaped box will resolve problems in a troubled relationship. [when all this will do is make her fat]. also, if you cruise the VDay aisles february 14th betwwen 4 and 6PM–you will find the aisles packed with last minute charley’s casing the card bins for that perfect scrap of mush
to simply “shut her up” or face the dire consequence of a night outside sleeping in the backyard with the family pooch. meaningful? NOT. why do people need this day to emphasize something that should be given all year round. just call me practical. my plans? watching the NASCAR race at Daytona of course. gentlemen, start your engines.

  23. Valentine’s day is a day to love.
We celebrate Valentine’s Day because all holidays are because of love, but one needs to be ABOUT love.

  24. i think that i heard of a st valentines and something about him and i think otherwise, that people wanted to do something special for their loved ones. i will be alone on valentines day.

  25. kudo’s for k97 city’s answer. February 14th is for fat girls. yep. fat girls
    with guilt-ridden husbands.

  26. Because people did it last February. And the one before that. And lots of February 14ths before that. No one knows anymore, no one cares. For people who have someone special, the day is important because it’s a symbol of love. But for people who don’t, they take the day as a horrible curse that shows their lonliness and makes them stick out like a sore thumb. So they whine and complain about a month ahead of time, all the way up to the actual day. Then they get mad that they didn’t get anything. Maybe they would have if they hadn’t been such a sour puss about it!

I have just as normal plans as anyone else. My best friend will constitute as my valentine since both of us are single, and we’ll probably hang out somewhere or eat out. Or hang out at a restaurant where we eat out! And that night, I’ll bake a million pink heart shaped spritz cookies and bring them to school on monday for all the kids who had a “horrific” night!

  27. There are so many legends, so many stories about St. Valentine and the origin of Valentine’s Day.. No one really knows what is true and what is just legend.

There were several “Valentine’s” in Roman times. The legend is that the St. Valentine was a Christian priest who married Christians when the Romans forbade Christians to marry. So Valentine was arrested. But the Roman emperor Claudius II liked him and kept him alive until Valentine decided to try to convert him. Then it was ordered that Valentine was to be killed. But while awaiting death, he befriended his jailer’s daughter and cured her of blindness.. Then he sent her notes signed “From Your Valentine”.

Another version of the story is that Claudius decided that Roman soldiers fought better if they were unmarried, so he did not allow Roman soldiers to be married. But Valentine secretly married many soldiers to their sweethearts.

There was also a Roman festival in the middle of February (Lupercalia) that had a theme of love and lust. Many of the Valentine’s Day customs come from those pagan festivals.

Finally, as the sun gets stronger in the sky with the passing of deep winter, more light supposedly causes the pituitary gland to produce more sex hormones in man and animals.. so the sex drive of man and animals starts to heat up in the northern climates by mid-February.

Put that together with romantization that started during the middle ages and …. voila…. Valentine’s Day celebrations!!

  28. I don’t have any plan. Just celebrate the people I love.

    I love my family. :)

    I love dark chocolate.

Today, Friday, February 5th, is my 15th birthday! XD

  29. people probably just wanna take a day out of the year besides their anniversary and spend some time with their loved ones or just wanna do something special just for the heck of it. my plans are to surprise my loved one and have a good time. im just trying to stay optimistic in these dark times…

  30. I find the ‘celebration’ is far too commercial, and more often causes pain to those who desparately want a loving partner.

My creative reflection is as follows… I wrote this poem after watching a lovely freind go through another day of needless pain, when all eyes seemed to focus on her solitude.

    The Dreaded V

Today we pass that dreaded ‘V’
    All gaudy Red pomposity
Though some will make it truly be
A day for love, for memory

Most will know the bitter taste
Of vapid flower and thorny waste
As most will know the source of card
No mystery to solve, it’s not hard

There is no fun if all is known
True love is always better shown
By other ways than joining in
To fill the nations rubbish bin

To spend a fortune for the pleasure
    Funding fatcats, for their leisure
The money you waste, could instead
Be used to fund, a life near dead

To educate a child in hope
    Or help another person cope
    Why not agree in advance
To help another have a chance

    Help the needy
    Not the greedy
    St.Valentine’s Day is really dead
Love one another God has said

  31. We celebrate Valentine’s Day, because until 1969, it was one of the many Saint’s Days observed by the Catholic Church. It was dedicated to the patron saint of romantic causes, St. Valentine.

I will celebrate my Valentines day with my friends and boy friend, with my boyfriend being romantic giving presents! It will be so romantic!

  32. we celebrate it because for the people we love (friends and family) and also the day when arizona became a state….

  33. I’d like to say it was probably created in honor of Rudolph Valentino, one of the world’s greatest silent film stars, but without looking it up, couldn’t honestly say. As far as my plans go? I might go and have a massage, go to the movies or maybe just spend the day lounging around.
